What are Discovery Courses?

We aspire to be a community of learners – people who know they haven’t ‘figured it out’ yet and are hungry to grow as people before God. Discovery Courses offer great discussion and opportunities to Know Jesus, Grow in Jesus, Show Jesus and Go in Jesus. Build community while being a part of these courses as an individual or a community group.

Eating a Bible Burger

Sunday nights, January 11, 18 and 25 from 6-7:30pm at LFC. Sometimes reading the Bible is like eating a monster burger: it looks really tasty but it’s hard to get your hands around it. Start by cutting it in half and digesting one half at a time. In this course, Mitch White will help you get the big picture of the Old and New Testaments. At the end of the course, you will be able to see how it all works together, giving you better thinking about God.

Marriage Enrichment and Mentor Training

Thursday Nights: 7-8:30pm February 5, 12, 19, 26. The Marriage Enrichment & Mentor Training course is a great way for couples to empower and improve their relationships. Marriage Mentoring is an opportunity to meet with another couple, ask questions, discuss your marriage, and get input about life’s struggles while sharing life lessons, growing closer to your spouse and spending time together. Whether it takes place over a few months or longer, it can be a time that enriches your marriage for a lifetime! The course will be led by Tim and Christina Lewis.

Show Jesus

One Body-Many Parts

Sunday Nights: 6-7:45pm February 15, 22 & March 1. 1 Corinthians 12:27 tells us we are now “the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” But sometimes it’s hard to know the role you play and your own unique giftedness. This class will be a powerful guide to understanding all God had in mind for you from His first thought of you. Learn about your Spiritual Gifts, explore your passions, and your style so that you can find your “sweet spot” for maximum impact in your journey with Christ. Because classes build on one-another it’s important to be able to attend all weeks.

Kids 101

This course has been canceled. We are in the process of rethinking how this class is taught. We are looking at a better time that’s easier for the children and creating an additional class that could be taken prior to Kids Welcome 101. Therefore, the next Kids Welcome 101 will be in the Fall of 2009. We are very sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.

H.E.L.P. Leadership Institute

Sunday Nights, 6-7:45pm February 15, 22 & March 1, 8. Helping Empower Local People, H.E.L.P., is a national organization to advance social justice interests in our local communities and LFC is one of 15 congregations laying the foundation for expansion of H.E.L.P. into the North Mecklenburg area. A critical building block in this process is a Leadership Institute that will be offered these 4 weeks here at LFC. It will offer participants training in a number of areas that enable them to serve as “bridges” connecting member congregations with the larger H.E.L.P. organization.
Specific topics include:

  • Why organize? – based on the history and traditions of our religious, civic and education organizations.
  • The fundamental organizing skills – individual relational meetings, listening campaigns, research, negotiations and action.
  • Strengthening our institutions – systematically engaging people in a culture that is relational, action-oriented and reflective/learning.
  • Problems versus Issues – moving from general problems to concrete, winnable issues.
  • Using relational power in the public arena to negotiate for the common good.

Friendship with Others/Friendship with God

Sunday Nights: 6-7:45pm March 8, 15, 22, 29. Explore the nature of friendship with other people and with God in a different manner. Explore different types of friendships and what a deep and true friendship should look like as we look at friendship with God. Then take steps to apply this to various relationships with emphasis on the words of Jesus to “love your neighbor”. Brandon Dahm will take you on this theological exploration of friendship.

Spiritual Leadership

This Course Has Been Canceled. We are in a leadership driven culture. Yet, many of the leadership principles that are taught by our culture are destructive when it comes to Spiritual leadership. Join our Elders in this course that is centered on discussions from the book, “Spiritual Leadership” by Oswald Sanders. Open to anyone and encouraged for anyone interested in leadership at LFC.
