Ministry Description

The Butterfly Bin is a volunteer-run, grassroots mission which accepts donations of new and used furniture & household items and then displays them in a free store for the working poor in our local community. Shoppers are referred by local partner agencies and typically have some of the following in common: hard-working, making a transition or starting over, single parent, victim of natural disaster/fire or displaced, at least one person sleeping on the floor or severely disadvantaged.

Just as butterflies spread sweetness from flower to flower, we spread HOPE from one home to another.

Our Origin

The Butterfly Bin started in 2004, by professional organizing individuals, who noticed a huge need to recycle furnishings. As their clients would remodel, de-clutter, and get rid of useful, very good items, a vision ensued to redirect them to the needy. What followed was the creation of the Charlotte area’s first free, furniture bank.

The “Butterfly” symbol honors a young girl, lost at 4 1/2 months due to a heart defect. Through her LIFE, she touched more people than the number of days she was on earth. The Bin is her legacy – and the butterfly, a reminder of rebirth, new beginnings and our ability to help neighbors have new hope. God’s hand often amazingly, provides exactly what others need–sometimes a bed, a blanket, a chair, a memory provoking picture, or simply a welcoming face.
