RE: A Conversation with a Buddy

Teresa Chelko serves on Sunday mornings as a “buddy” to David, a six years old sports lover who is affectionate, happy, and has Downs Syndrome. I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her experience.

“How did you become a part of LFC?”

We were invited by friends about 2 years ago.

“What led you to serve as a buddy?”

My heart has always been pulled in the direction of being helpful towards those with special needs.

“Describe for us a morning as David’s buddy”.

I’m there as he arrives, and he greets everyone. I encourage and model good speech for him, helping him to be clear. I allow him to choose activities that interest him, then I simply help him enjoy those activities. I help him connect and interact with others in the class. He will be moving up to the Spot in the fall, so my time with him now is preparing us for that transition. Because of the relationship we have built together, he will know to look for me in the Spot and I will know what to expect from him there.

“How would things be different, if David did not have a buddy?”

Without a buddy, his needs would often pull one of the two classroom teachers away from their normal role. With a buddy, the morning flows more like a natural environment, as intended. He gets to participate in things just as as they are set up.

“How do YOU benefit from your time with David?”

I’ve made a friend! The joy when he sees me, makes my heart full - that unconditional, pure love.

“What advice would you give to someone who might feel drawn to serve in this way?”

Come with a friend attitude. Those with varying special needs don’t necessarily need everything done for them, but stand in the gap where they seem to fall short. Pull up a chair for them, so to speak - help them feel more comfortable so that they can fit in and be a part.

Teresa is one of two full time buddies currently serving children in our church. A need remains for buddies ready to assist a child in need of one-on-one care or guidance. The commitment involves one service each Sunday morning. There also exists a need for subs, able to fill in when buddies must be absent.

Anyone interested is invited to a gathering of volunteers on Sunday, August 17 from 2-4pm in the Barn Door Room Area. Byron Sellers from Joni and Friends will be speaking, and child care will be provided. Please RSVP by Thursday, August 14th to Rebecca Guest at rguest@lakeforest.org.
