Mission Athens, Ohio 2010

Sunday, August 1 - Saturday, August 7

Destination & Partnership

Lake Forest Church will join with a new partner this summer, Good Works, Inc. in Athens, Ohio. This ministry will challenge any stereotypes associated with the poor by creating opportunities to form friendships with individuals who struggle with poverty.

Objectives

As a Christian community, we are compelled by the Biblical vision to love the stranger, defend the widow and care for the fatherless (Deuteronomy 10:18, Psalm 67:5-6, Matthew 25:31-46 & James 1:26-27). Good Works is focused on these population groups with two over-riding values: to love God and to love our neighbor. The goal is to not only provide the church the opportunity to serve the poor, but to also serve with the poor. This gives the Work Group volunteers the opportunity to relate as peers, breaking down the barriers of “us and them” that often separate people from different economic classes. You will serve on what is called a “Worship Team” as your service will be an offering in obedience to God. Projects include, but are not limited to, Kids Discovery Club, Samaritan Projects, Good Works House Projects, Transformation Station, and Community Friday Night Life.

Participants

This trip is designed for approximately 25 adult Ministry Partners and non-ministry partners who are attending LFC. Children of team members are invited to come experience this opportunity with their family. Children will participate in various age-appropriate ministry opportunities and devotionals. As part of the application process, we will discuss with you the appropriateness of your child’s age for this trip. People under 18 years of age are required to travel with a parent or guardian.

Travel

Team members will travel together. All travel arrangements will be made by the team leader with the team staying in the Good Works Hannah House. Visiting groups are responsible for their own meals, but will have full use of the kitchen for meal preparation.

Cost

The estimated cost of this trip is $495. You will be required to pay one third of this cost - $165 - as a deposit expressing your commitment of time and resources to the trip.

From Keith Wasserman
Founder and Executive Director of Good Works, Inc.

“Many times I say, ‘God, why did you sen”d this person to me? I cannot help them.’ It is in these times I often hear the whisper of the Father say, ‘I know. I have sent them to help you.’”
