Ministry Description

“1.1 billion people live without access to safe drinking water. 2.2 million people die every year from this direct cause. The Blue Planet Run will cover 15,200 miles, across 16 countries and 4 continents, 24 hours a day for 95 days to deliver an extremely urgent and important message: we can and must begin today to alleviate the catastrophic burden placed on over a billion people who, every day, must drink unsafe local water, or travel long distances on foot to search for safe water for themselves and their families.

Starting in New York City on June 1, 2007, a team of 20 elite runners from various countries will run around the clock along a route that includes the U.S., Ireland, the U.K., France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan and Canada. Each runner will sprint 10 miles a day. Batons will be passed at over 1,500 exchange points. The Run will end back in New York City, on September 4, 2007.”

In Mike’s own words:

I AM going to the Gobi desert in Mongolia next Wednesday, but its not really because of this sermon series. I’m going to partner with my friend Max Helton (LFC Ministry Partner, founder of Nascar’s ‘Motor Racing Outreach’ and now ‘Worldspan: International Sports Services’ organization). We will be counselors for the 20 runners of The Blue Planet Run, an effort to raise awareness and funds for the global drinking water crisis by holding the first-ever relay foot-race around the literal globe. The run is sponsored by Dow Chemical, in partnership with the UN’s global poverty goals and strategy.

I invite you to explore the Blue Planet Run’s website and at least sign on to their weekly newsletter and daily blog. They will be encouraged that folks in North Carolina are aware of and supportive of their efforts. You may even feel led to get involved in some way yourself. I don’t know if Max and I will show up in the blog, but we will be there serving the runners needs, encouraging them, as they run across Mongolia and China - the toughest part of their journey.

I am excited to partner with people, no matter their stance on faith, regarding an important cause that I think God cares about very much - safe drinking water for all people.
